Transforming Lives and Communities in Southwestern Georgia
Appalachia

Appalachia covers 13 states and is one of the most impoverished regions in the United States. World Vision in Appalachia serves the people of north-central West Virginia. The closing of coal mines in the 1960s left abandoned communities with few resources to economically rebuild. Partnering with World Servants and Appalachia Community CARE, we come alongside communities working to help themselves.

Neighbors helping neighbors

One of the most valuable assets shared by people in this region is a strong sense of family and community. Much of World Vision’s work is carried out through community centers and churches in Brownton, Chestnut Ridge, and Flemington.

  • The Storehouse: Providing building materials, medical supplies, clothing, personal care items, and school supplies to families and to local churches and organizations assisting families
  • Tools for Transformation: Training and encouraging Christian leaders as they address local needs—as well as coordinating short-term missions trips to Appalachia’s poorest communities
  • Vision Youth: Partnering with schools and churches to focus on educational support and mentor relationships for at-risk children and youth
