What is Advocacy?

Advocate-
    1. One that argues for a cause; a supporter or defender:

    2. One that pleads in another's behalf; an intercessor

Advocacy is a critical component of World Vision’s work to tackle the causes of poverty, protect children and promote justice. To do this, World Vision advocates for the poor who do not have the freedom to speak out for their own good.

In World Vision's work, advocacy is a project, program or programmatic approach that seeks to address the structural and systemic causes of poverty by changing policies, systems, practices and attitudes that perpetuate inequality and deny justice and human rights.

Advocacy is a ministry of influence using persuasion, dialogue and reason to obtain change. To be successful it must work at two levels: policy influence and citizen empowerment.

You can join World Vision as an advocate by using your privilege of U.S. citizenship to encourage our elected officials to support laws that help the poor and protect children. We live in a country that has great influence over the circumstance of poorer countries.

Simply expressing your concern about issues that affect the poor can have a tremendous impact. Your senators, representative and the President will listen, because your vote keeps them in office.

As an advocate, you can serve the poor in a very unique way.We can bridge the gap between the poor and those who have the power to help bring them out of poverty.
