As trite as it sounds, miracles happen every day. Everyone in Flyleaf has their own story of witnessing miracles. The redemptive power in music unites vocalist Lacey Mosley, guitarists Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya, bassist Pat Seals, and drummer James Culpepper.
Flyleaf’s lyrics and music transcend the boundaries that separate many people. Hope drives Flyleaf's music; the songs often tell stories, from a first-hand experience to a beautiful letter to a meeting with a fan. Driven by more than just a passion for music, the band feels this is not what they want to do in life, but what they must do. "We will continue with Flyleaf until the doors close, and when they do, we will look back on everything and thank God for it all. Hopefully, we will have done what we were meant to do," says Lacey Mosley.
Five years ago, Mosley started playing with James Culpepper. The two joined with Bhattacharya and Hartmann, who were in a local band that had just split up. “Our first practice together was awesome,” Mosley says. “Sameer and Jared are really experimental with melodies and pedals, and we all have different influences that were all blending together with the same passionate and hopeful heart, and that brought out this beautiful feeling. It was magical.” After generating plenty of label interest, Flyleaf finally signed with AM/Octone records. Their debut full-length album, Flyleaf, was released in October 2005.
After a critically acclaimed, Platinum debut album and three hit singles, the band still feels their live show best reflects Flyleaf’s true heart. "I don't think people can know who we really are and what we really want to communicate without seeing us live. The album is the closest we have ever gotten to capturing it on a recording, but the part missing from the record is something we wish we didn't have to leave out. If we had it our way, everyone would know us first by our show, not just our album or the song they heard on the radio."
The time that Flyleaf has spent on the road over the past few years has been an unimaginable, bittersweet treat. The band has traveled the world three times over with engagements in Japan, Australia, Europe, and the UK, while playing with the likes of Korn, Metallica, Deftones, Stone Sour, Atreyu, Velvet Revolver and many others along the way.
The band is also no stranger to television, having appeared on MTV2, MTV, Fuse, Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daily and more. With their third video, “All Around Me” becoming a Top 40 hit, more people are experiencing Flyleaf’s music and message.
After several years of touring and building an impressive fan base, the band still remembers their roots. "We have been given so much and it's our responsibility to not forget where we come from and give back when we can," explains Lacey.
A soft whisper parallels the dark, urgent, deafening thunder that pours from the band on stage; they seem to be saying over and over, “We have been given so much… Here, you have some too.” The band’s performance transcends the every day to become something truly magical and elsewhere— miraculous, even. But then again, miracles happen every day.
