Zambia Home-based Care Kits for People Living with HIV/AIDS

Contents of the Kit

What is the need?

The Zambian health community has concluded that clinic-based care for all persons living with HIV/AIDS is not achievable. Zambia has an HIV prevalence of approximately 21%. The Zambia Ministry of Health estimates that 210 people from ages 15–49 die of AIDS each day. The demand on health services caused by HIV/AIDS is evident in the high occupancy rates reported by health facilities. It is estimated that the proportion of available beds used for AIDS patients will rise from 7% in 1989 to 45% in 2014.

What is the solution?

Zambia must implement a system of home-based care in which community volunteers are trained in hygiene, nutrition, and psychosocial support. Caregivers require supplies needed to care for people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as protect themselves from the infection. These resources include basic items such as soap, gloves, bandages and simple painkillers.

Project Objectives

With the assistance of donations in the form of cash or in-kind items, the project will train and provide volunteer community caregivers with 733 home-based care kits (value $800 each) benefiting 2,728 people living with AIDS in 18 project areas. Caregivers will have a coordinator with a health care background to provide support and supervision. Caregiver training includes:
  • Monitoring of child well-being (including health, nutrition, and psychosocial status)
  • Emergency nutritional support when necessary and available
  • Healthful nutrition practices
  • Self-protection from HIV/AIDS
  • Mother-to-child transmission and prevention education
  • Palliative care to reduce physical suffering through basic medicines and/or traditional remedies
