Burundi Mobile Health Clinic

What is the need?

Civil war and genocide has devastated the infrastructure of the small African nation of Burundi. Returning refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, as well as other diseases.

In 1972 and 1993, genocide claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Hutu and Tutsi people. UNICEF estimates that there are about 450,000 orphans in Burundi, mainly due to the war and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The provinces of Cankuzo, Karusi and Muyinga, located in the north and northeast part of the country, are Burundi’s least developed areas and are also home to most returning refugees. This is overwhelming the nearly non-existent public services – particularly healthcare.

What is the solution?

In order to deal with the critical needs of basic healthcare, a mobile clinic will provide interventions to meet urgent needs identified by local health officials.
  • Training of health care workers
  • HIV/AIDS prevention education to the population
  • Prevention and treatment of malaria and communicable diseases
  • Provision of prenatal care

Project Objectives
  • Identify key health issues and the top 10 diseases as appropriate to each province
  • Conduct health education activities for the beneficiaries on identified basic preventive health measures
  • Train community health workers in environmental, household and personal hygiene
  • Train local authorities on management of community health activities
  • Acquire emergency medicines through donations and/or local purchase of medicines
  • Provide basic treatments as appropriate
