Serving children and families in need

World Vision’s work in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (commonly referred to as North Korea) started in September 1995 when North Korea appealed to the international community for help with famine relief. World Vision responded quickly with emergency assistance, providing $5.5 million worth of food, medicines, agricultural supplies, and clothing between 1995 and 1997.

In 1998, World Vision’s efforts in North Korea were expanded under UN guidelines to help rehabilitate the agriculture and health sectors.

Today, the nationwide food shortage still persists in North Korea. Agricultural production remains low due to a combination of factors—a shortage of critical farming inputs such as fertilizer, fuel, and pesticides; the deterioration of industrial plants and the shutting down of industries; and destructive seasonal weather patterns.
